What Happens When Your Teen Thinks They’re Awkward in Photos?

One of the first things parents tell me before a senior session is that their teen hates having their picture taken. Sometimes it is said jokingly, sometimes with real concern, but I hear it all the time. “He’s going to make this difficult.” “She feels awkward in front of the camera.” “They’re not really into photos.” And honestly, I understand why so many teenagers feel uncomfortable being photographed right now. They are growing up in a world where they constantly see polished, edited versions of other people while also being deeply aware of every little thing about themselves.

The truth is, the seniors who are nervous about photos are usually the ones who end up surprising everyone. They walk into the session guarded at first, unsure of what to do or worried they are going to look uncomfortable the entire time. Then slowly, without forcing anything, they start relaxing into themselves. A little conversation helps. Movement helps. Taking the pressure off helps. By the middle of the session, most parents are watching their teen laugh naturally in a way they have not seen in front of a camera for years.

I think parents sometimes assume their son or daughter needs to arrive confident and outgoing for a session to go well, but that has honestly never been the expectation here. My job is guiding them through the experience so they never feel like they have to perform or figure it all out on their own. No senior walks into a session already knowing exactly how to pose or what to do with their hands. We figure it out together, and the best images usually happen once they stop trying so hard to “look right.”

The seniors I remember most are rarely the loudest ones. They are the thoughtful kids who bring parts of their real life into the session without even realizing it matters. Maybe it is the old pickup truck they love driving, the sport they have spent years playing, the music constantly coming through the car speakers, or the quiet sense of humor that only comes out once they feel comfortable. Those details are what make a gallery feel personal years later instead of looking like every other senior session on the internet.

Parents feel pressure during this season too, even when they try not to show it. Senior year moves quickly, and suddenly there is this awareness that life is about to change. These sessions are not just about graduation announcements or yearbook photos. They become one of the last times you are documenting your teenager exactly as they are before adulthood starts pulling everything forward. That realization catches a lot of parents off guard once the gallery is delivered.

One of my favorite things about senior sessions is watching confidence grow in real time. Not the loud, attention-seeking kind of confidence, but the quieter version that shows up when a teenager realizes they do not need to pretend to be someone else to look good in photos. You can actually see the shift happen during a session. Shoulders relax. Smiles stop looking forced. Parents stop worrying. The whole experience becomes less about “getting through it” and more about seeing their child clearly for who they already are.

So if your son or daughter keeps insisting they are awkward in photos, I want you to know that they are not the exception. They are actually the reason I care so much about creating an experience that feels comfortable and real. Years from now, I do not want these images to remind your family of what was trendy or perfectly posed during senior year. I want them to bring you back to this exact version of your child, the one standing right on the edge of adulthood while still feeling completely, unmistakably like home.
