Helena: Humboldt Iowa Senior Portraits

There are some senior sessions that stay with me because of the photos, and then there are sessions that stay with me because of the people. Helena’s session was both.
From the moment she walked in with her mom and grandma, there was this quiet sweetness about all of them that made the entire day feel easy in the best possible way. The biggest hope her family had going into the session was simple. They wanted Helena to feel comfortable enough to enjoy herself and confident enough to see herself the way the people closest to her already do. That mattered to me just as much as creating beautiful images.
One of my favorite parts of senior sessions is watching someone slowly settle into the experience. At first, Helena was a little unsure of herself in front of the camera, which is honestly so normal. Most seniors are not showing up knowing exactly what to do with their hands or how to move naturally. That is where I step in. We took our time, talked through everything, and let the session unfold naturally so she never felt overwhelmed or uncomfortable. Once hair and makeup were finished and she started seeing how beautiful she looked, everything began to shift. As the session went on, you could see Helena relax more and more. Her smile became more natural, her movement felt softer, and she started laughing more easily between photos. Before long, we were capturing images that felt full of personality and life instead of stiff posing. Helena trusted me enough to lean into the experience, and that trust made such a difference throughout the session.
What I loved most was how supported she was the entire day. Her mom and grandma were right there cheering her on, encouraging her, and celebrating every moment with her. You could feel how deeply loved she is. Sessions like this are such a reminder that senior photos are rarely only about senior year. They also hold so much meaning for the people who have walked through every stage of life alongside their child and suddenly find themselves realizing how quickly these years have passed.
Talking with Helena throughout her session made me admire her even more. She described herself as smart, kind, loyal, and intelligent, and those qualities came through immediately. She talked about loving Best Buddies and Art Club because they gave her the chance to spend time with good friends and be part of something meaningful. She is passionate about equality and believes every person has the right to fully be themselves, which is such a thoughtful and powerful perspective for someone her age to carry with confidence.
One thing she shared that really stayed with me was her belief in speaking up for justice and doing the right thing. There is such a steady strength in that mindset. Helena may have a gentle spirit, but she also has conviction, compassion, and determination that I think will take her far as she heads into college and whatever comes next. I also loved hearing about her hopes to travel because she absolutely seems like someone who will continue growing through every new experience she steps into.
By the end of our time together, seeing Helena relaxed, smiling, and fully herself felt incredibly rewarding. Her family trusted me with something important, and being able to give them images that reflect not only how beautiful Helena is, but who she is, means more than I can say. Sessions like this are why I love what I do because they give seniors the chance to feel confident, celebrated, and truly seen during a season that passes so quickly.
