When should I schedule newborn photos?

The best time to schedule your newborn photography session is while you’re still expecting. Most parents book during their second or third trimester to ensure availability.

Newborn sessions are typically photographed within the first 10–14 days after birth, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those classic newborn poses. As a newborn photographer serving Humboldt, Fort Dodge, Algona, and North Central Iowa, I understand that due dates can be unpredictable. Your session is penciled in around your due date, and once baby arrives, we’ll finalize the exact time.

If your baby arrives early or later than expected, don’t worry — I’ll adjust the schedule so you don’t miss this special stage.

What if I don’t know my baby’s sex when planning my newborn session?

Not finding out baby’s gender is such a fun surprise — and it doesn’t affect your newborn photography session at all.

We plan your session using soft, neutral tones, simple textures, and timeless styling that work beautifully for any baby. Once your little one arrives, we can add in any final touches if you’d like.

Newborn sessions are designed to be calm, flexible, and baby-led. We allow time for feeding, soothing, and snuggles so your little one can settle naturally. With years of experience photographing newborns, I have plenty of gentle techniques to help create beautiful newborn portraits, even if baby is a little more awake.

Most sessions flow smoothly without needing to reschedule — so you can relax and trust the process.

How do I prepare my baby for a newborn photography session?

Preparing for your newborn session is simple — I’ll guide you every step of the way so it feels easy and stress-free.

On the morning of your session, I recommend giving baby a quick bath to help with flaky skin and to help them feel fresh and relaxed. If you’re located within about 30 minutes of my Humboldt, Iowa newborn photography studio, feeding your baby right before you leave can help encourage a sleepy, cozy session.

Once you arrive, everything is set up and ready. If your baby needs to be fed, changed, or comforted during the session, we take all the time needed — there is never any rush.
