Sam: Humboldt Iowa Senior Guys Photography

Sam has been part of my world for a long time, which made this senior session feel a little more personal than most. I photographed his sister a few years ago, and somewhere along the way he just became one of those kids who is always around. He’s best friends with my nephew, shows up like he belongs, and if I’m being honest, he kind of does. The way he treats my kids, the way he just fits into the flow of things, it’s easy to forget he’s not actually mine. Sessions like this always carry a little extra weight in the best way.
Going into his session, I knew it wasn’t going to be complicated. Sam is laid back in a way that you can’t really teach. He doesn’t overthink things, doesn’t need a ton of direction, and never once made it feel like this was something he had to get through. It just felt like an evening hanging out, moving from one spot to the next, letting things unfold naturally. When he said it was fast and fun, that felt exactly right. Not rushed, just easy.
Of course his truck had to be part of it. There was no version of this session where that wasn’t happening. It’s such a big part of who he is right now, and honestly, it made the whole thing feel even more like him. We let it smoke, laughed our way through it, and leaned into that energy instead of trying to tone it down. Those are always the moments that end up meaning the most later on, the ones that feel a little loud and a little imperfect but completely real.
We spent time by the water and out in the fields, and it ended up being one of those evenings where everything just works out. It had looked like rain earlier in the day, and I know that can make people nervous, but it held off and gave us the kind of light you hope for without trying too hard to chase it. The greens were full, the air felt good, and nothing about it felt forced. We had room to move, to take our time, to let Sam settle into it without pressure.
He’s spent a lot of his life in wrestling, which says more about him than he probably would. It’s something that’s been part of his family for years, something he grew up around with his friends, and that kind of consistency shapes a person. It teaches you how to show up, how to push through, how to stay steady even when things get uncomfortable. You can see that in him, even in the quiet ways he carries himself. What I’ve always appreciated about Sam is that he doesn’t try to be anything he’s not. He’s comfortable being who he is, and that comes through in everything from the way he talks to the way he interacts with people. He looks up to his dad, and you can see that influence in the way he approaches life. There’s a groundedness there, paired with a sense of humor that keeps things light and easy. He’s the kind of kid who just enjoys where he is, and that’s not something you can fake.
After graduation, he’s planning to head into line work, following a path that makes sense for him and fits the kind of life he wants to build. It’s practical, it’s hands-on, and it suits him in a way that feels really natural. This session didn’t need a lot of buildup or big moments to make it meaningful. It was just Sam, exactly as he is right now, and sometimes that ends up being the best kind of story to tell.
