Booking your senior's photo session usually starts out pretty simply. You pick a photographer whose work you love, find a date that works with everyone's schedule, and before you know it, senior year is flying by. What I've noticed over the years, though, is that the questions parents ask after the session are often the ones they wish they had thought to ask before they booked. Not because anything went wrong, but because they didn't realize how much the experience itself would matter.

One of the biggest questions I hear afterward is, "What if my senior isn't comfortable in front of the camera?" It's a fair concern because most teenagers aren't professional models, and many of them would rather do almost anything than pose for pictures. The good news is that they don't have to know what they're doing. My job is to guide them through the entire session so they never have to wonder where to stand, what to do with their hands, or whether they're smiling the right way. Some of my most outgoing seniors start the session feeling nervous, and some of the quietest ones end up surprising everyone.

Another thing parents often tell me is that they didn't realize how much planning goes into a successful session. Choosing outfits, deciding what to bring, and figuring out locations can feel overwhelming if you're trying to do it on your own. That's why I spend time helping each senior prepare before we ever meet. When you have a plan in place, the day feels relaxed instead of rushed, and your senior can focus on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about the details.

I also wish more families knew they don't have to force their senior into someone else's idea of what senior pictures should look like. Your son doesn't need to pretend he's someone he isn't, and your daughter doesn't need to wear something because it's trending online. The best portraits happen when seniors feel like themselves. Whether that's bringing sports equipment, incorporating a favorite hobby, dressing up, keeping it casual, or doing a little of both, those personal touches are what make the images meaningful years from now.

One question that doesn't get asked often enough is what happens after the gallery is delivered. It's easy to think the session ends once the images are edited, but that's really when the fun begins. I love helping families decide how they'll actually enjoy these photographs, whether that's creating an album, choosing wall art, or finding gifts for grandparents. Years from now, those are the pieces that will still be bringing smiles instead of sitting unnoticed in a folder on a computer.

Parents are also sometimes surprised by how emotional senior sessions can be. They expect to spend an evening taking pictures, but they don't expect to drive home realizing just how close graduation really is. Somewhere between the laughter, the outfit changes, and watching your teenager step confidently in front of the camera, it hits you that this season is almost over. It's one of my favorite parts of what I do because I get to witness families slowing down long enough to appreciate this milestone together.

If I could encourage parents to ask one more question before booking senior photos, it would simply be this: "Will my senior enjoy this experience?" Beautiful images matter, of course, but so does the memory of creating them. My goal has never been to rush through a checklist of poses. I want every senior to leave feeling seen, encouraged, and more confident than when they arrived, because that's something they'll carry with them long after graduation.

Senior year has a way of sneaking up on families. One minute you're dropping them off for their first day of kindergarten, and the next you're talking about graduation parties, college visits, or what comes after high school.
