Keaton: Senior Guys Session in Humboldt Iowa

Some senior sessions have a very clear star of the show. In this case it might have been Keaton… but if we are being completely honest, his dog Rocko made a very strong case for that title. Between the two of them and Keaton’s hilarious mom cheering us on from the sidelines, this session had the kind of energy that makes the whole afternoon fly by.

Keaton is one of those seniors who is just easy to be around. He describes himself as funny, kindhearted, and witty, and that combination showed up the entire time we were shooting. Nothing overly serious, just a relaxed afternoon moving from spot to spot, talking about life after high school, and capturing photos along the way. When I asked him afterward how the session felt, he told me it was a painless process and that means a lot to me. I also know a lot of senior guys go into this thinking photos are going to be awkward or take forever. Keaton was proof that it really does not have to be that way. We keep things simple, move quickly, and make it easy. No weird posing marathons and no hours of standing around. Most of the guys I photograph end up telling me afterward it was way easier than they expected.

He mentioned that one of the things he loved most was the locations we used, which made me smile because planning those spots is one of my favorite parts of the process. I spend a lot of time finding places that photograph beautifully but also give seniors space to just hang out and move naturally. With Keaton’s laid back personality, those settings were the perfect match. Now let’s talk about Rocko for a second. If you bring a dog to your senior session there is a very good chance they will steal at least a little attention, and Rocko fully embraced the moment. He popped into photos, kept everyone laughing, and honestly made the session even more memorable. I will never complain about a dog guest star.

During high school Keaton spent a lot of time running cross country and track. What meant the most to him was not just the competition but the friendships that came with those seasons. Those early morning practices, race days, and team moments are the kinds of memories that tend to stick with you long after graduation.

One thing Keaton shared that really stood out to me was the perspective he gained during high school. He said one of the biggest lessons he learned was realizing that these four years are just a small snippet of life. That realization helped him stop worrying so much about what everyone else thinks, which is a pretty great mindset to carry into the future.

Looking ahead, Keaton is interested in heading into the trades, specifically HVAC. He likes the idea of getting trained and stepping into the workforce quickly. After graduation he is also planning a trip to California to visit his uncle who builds TV and movie sets, and he might even get the chance to work alongside him for about thirty days to see if that path might be something he enjoys.

Keaton, I loved getting to photograph this season for you. You are genuinely such a sweet guy, your mom kept me laughing the whole time, and Rocko absolutely earned his moment in the spotlight. And for the guys out there who are still on the fence about senior photos, take it from Keaton. It might actually end up being a pretty good afternoon (and your dog might end up being famous!)
