Sending your child off to college is a huge moment filled with pride, excitement, and a little bit of “wow, the house is so quiet now.” It’s normal to feel a mix of emotions at once, and that doesn’t take away from the joy of seeing your child step into this new chapter. This season is a chance to embrace what comes next for both your child and for you. It will take time and adjustment but hear me out…it can also be the start of something wonderful.
Create a daily routine for yourself: With your schedule no longer tied to someone else’s school and activities, you have a unique opportunity to craft a daily rhythm that feels good to you. It could be something simple like morning coffee on the porch, an evening walk, or scheduling blocks of time for reading, crafting, or cooking. Designing your own routine helps this new chapter feel intentional and energizing, and will keep you from crawling back into bed and crying (although you will still probably have days like that, and that’s okay!).
Start a project you’ve been putting off: This is the perfect time to finally tackle something you’ve been wanting to do. Maybe it’s organizing family photos, planting a small garden, redecorating a room, or diving into a long-term creative project. Choosing something that excites you keeps your days busy and fulfilling while also giving you a sense of accomplishment.
Learn something new: Trying a new class, hobby, or skill can be both fun and rejuvenating. You could take an online course, learn to paint, explore photography, or even start learning a language. Approaching life with curiosity keeps your mind active and gives you something to look forward to outside of your parenting role.
Create a new little support network: Connect with other parents who are navigating the same stage. Whether it’s a local moms’ group, a book club, or a casual coffee meet-up, sharing experiences and ideas with others can help you feel grounded. Talking to people who understand the mix of excitement and adjustment can be comforting and inspiring.
Take small, bite-size adventures: This could be as simple as exploring a nearby town, taking a weekend hike, visiting a museum, or trying a new restaurant. These small adventures add freshness to your life and create space for new memories that belong to this season.
Feel all the feelings: It’s natural to feel a variety of emotions as your child steps into their independence. Missing them, feeling proud, or even feeling a little lonely are all normal. Allow yourself to feel without judgment and find ways to process those emotions, whether that’s journaling, talking with friends, or simply reflecting during quiet moments.
This empty nest season is full of opportunities to explore your interests, try new things, and enjoy the rhythm that belongs to you. It’s a time for growth, curiosity, and embracing what’s ahead, and it can be just as exciting as it is emotional.
